We drove down the coast. The sky was clear. The roads werenât. Abandoned vehicles were scattered everywhere. It looked like people had just abandoned their lives here. Other areas had been cleared. Why not here? It made me wonder.
I asked.
âThe Nephilim havenât had a chance to clear everywhere yet,â the Commander said. âTheyâve spent the last three years searching for humans, clearing areas, and rebuilding infrastructure, but there are still some places they havenât gotten to.â
âWouldnât it have been safer to use a hospital in this area?â I asked.
âWe felt it was better to stay in an area they had already searched. Plus, you play the hand youâre dealt. It would have been tough to move everyone.â
Blue barked. My pulse spiked until I realized it was a different noise than his warning growl. He barked again. He probably needed a bathroom break. I asked the Commander to stop. He nodded.
Faith spoke up. âI need a stable place to work on Eva.â She had a makeshift fluid bag hanging from the ceiling that swung as we drove. âMaybe we could find a place to stop for the night.â
The Commander nodded again. He drove on for a while, searching for a spot that looked safe. I patted the dogâs head so he knew weâd stop soon. He was quiet. After we pulled over and let Blue relieve himself, we kept driving, searching.
As evening fell, we saw more Anakim in the streets. As usual. After the experience back at the house, I wasnât as afraid of them as I had been. But I was still unsure what the current rules were between us. They hadnât been afraid of me before. Not until I jumped out the window and attacked them. Had it been a fluke?
The Commander pulled the truck to a stop. I stepped out of the SUV and stretched. Blue hopped out and sniffed the air. He didnât growl.
To our left stood an abandoned high school. All cinder block and steel. A high chain-link fence surrounded it. Diagonally across the street was an old cathedral. Blue chose the church and darted off. We followed him.
Blue did a lap around the building to investigate. The Commander and I helped Faith carry in Eva. Beck grabbed the rest of our food and followed us.
The big front door opened easily. The sanctuary smelled of old pews and hymnals. The Commander looked around and immediately chose the high groundâthe balcony. Faith laid her patient out on a pew and went to work. Eva looked dead. I had felt the faint rise and fall of her chest as we carried her in, so I knew she wasnât. But she had to be close.
âStay here and keep an eye on them,â the Commander whispered.
Holding the shotgun at ready, he headed for the bell tower to scout the area. Beck followed him.
I watched Faith work. It felt nice to relax a little, and besides, Faith still looked beautiful to me even with the dirt and grime. After a while, she said, âNick, I need you to tell me the truth.
